Las Fallas: art, fire and Valencian tradition
The most eagerly awaited time of the year has arrived for Valencians: the Fallas, a very special festival that takes place from the 15th to the 19th of March. During these days, the city is filled with joy (more than usual!), music, colour and, of course, noise, lots of noise. It is a unique tradition in which gunpowder is the main protagonist.
Bands play in the streets and people can be seen dancing. Decorative lights illuminate every corner. Stalls of churros with chocolate appear everywhere and, in every street, authentic works of art known as els Ninots are erected.
It is a week in which the city is awake 24 hours a day: Valencia does not sleep, because it does not want to miss a second of this long-awaited moment.
These works of art, the Ninots, are giant papier-mâché monuments that represent the work of a whole year by the Fallas artists (yes, there is a profession dedicated exclusively to the Fallas). Through them, satires and social criticisms are shown.
Every year 800 Fallas monuments are planted in 400 different locations around the city. This event, known as the plantà, takes place on 15 March. Afterwards, they enter a competition where only one will be the winner. Finally, on 19 March, it all culminates with the night of the cremà, when these impressive structures are burnt, lighting up the sky over Valencia.
The first days of the Fallas (14th and 15th March) we will not be able to visit the inside of the Fallas because they are not yet planted (finished), but we will be able to see them from the outside. Therefore, we will enjoy a Fallas sweet par excellence: chocolate with churros, included in the experience!
